One of Orkney’s most famous and long-standing traditions, the Kirkwall Ba’ Game is a unique and chaotic ball game played through the heart of Kirkwall every Christmas and New Year's Day.

The game is contested between two sides – the Uppies and the Doonies – with teams traditionally determined by where players were born in the town. The teams meet in front of the Mercat Cross on Broad Street, and the Ba' is tossed into the middle of the pack at 1pm. The aim is simple: each side must carry, pass, and wrestle the leather ball (the “Ba’”) through the streets to their respective goal areas at opposite ends of Kirkwall. There is no time limit and games are often several hours long.

The participation of visitors in the game is not encouraged, mainly for safety reasons but also as Orcadians are very protective of tradition and the self-policing of the game. For spectators however, it’s a spectacular glimpse into Orcadian culture. Expect large crowds, shifting action, and an electric atmosphere throughout the town centre.

There is also a Boy's Ba' game on both days, which gets underway in the same spot in front of St Magnus Cathedral at 10am.

Good to know:
Spectators should keep a safe distance from the scrum at all times
The action moves quickly and unpredictably through the streets
Warm clothing and sturdy footwear are recommended
